How to Prepare Your Dog for Long Car Drives

Your dog loves to be with you everywhere you go. But if you are thinking of taking him or her on a long drive, your canine friend might not be too excited. Dogs do not understand technology like humans do and, to them, your car is similar to what an alien spacecraft may be to us - absolutely strange and even something to be feared.

Before taking your dog on a long drive, you must first introduce him or her to your car. You can start by placing treats in your vehicle. Leave the doors open so your dog is free to go inside and explore. Of course, you must be with your pet the whole time. If you turn your back for even just a minute, you might find your upholstery full of teeth marks when you get back.

Once your dog has gotten familiar with your car, it is time to take your pet on short drives. Make sure your dog is placed in the front seat to lessen his or her chances of feeling carsick. Furthermore, ensure that you have a pet harness or dog seatbelt and attach it securely to your furry friend before you start driving.

Your dog might feel alarmed when the car starts moving. It is important to constantly assure your dog, stroke him, and talk in soothing tones when he or she starts barking nervously. New experiences can make pets feel afraid and they need to be assured that everything is okay. Keep taking short drives with your dog until you feel that the experience is no longer stressful for him or her. In this way, you can effectively prepare them for longer rides in the future.
